Travelers heading to Cancun are being strongly advised to be careful when choosing their transportation from the airport. Recent reports and incidents highlight ongoing tension between traditional taxi services and rideshare app drivers, like Uber. These clashes have unfortunately sometimes caught tourists in the middle, leading to stressful arrivals. Official government bodies, including the Canadian government, have also noted that disputes can occur and may affect travelers.
Recent Clashes Cause Concern
During the last week of May 2025, at least two worrying incidents at the Cancun International Airport have put a spotlight on these transportation issues. In one case, a video shared widely on social media showed an Uber driver being harassed and blocked by individuals believed to be other transport operators. The Uber driver, filming from his car, explained that men were standing in front of his vehicle, stopping him from moving while they made calls on their phones. While it’s unclear if passengers were forced out in this specific event, similar things have happened before.
Another recent incident, reported by The Cancun Sun, involved an American family. They reportedly faced an assault and were visibly upset after their planned Uber ride from the airport was blocked and intimidated by a group of taxi drivers. This event, also captured on video, shows how tourists can directly experience the fallout from these disputes. Such confrontations can lead to delays and a lot of worry for visitors just trying to get to their hotels.
Walking a Kilometer to Catch an Uber
The high cost of some airport taxis is leading more tourists to take a long walk, sometimes over a kilometer, with their luggage to meet Uber drivers off airport property. Many do this to save money. For example, an official airport taxi to the Hotel Zone might quote $60 to $80 USD. By walking off-site, tourists hope to get an Uber for around $25 to $35 USD.
However, even this difficult walk doesn’t always mean a smooth ride. Travelers have reported still facing harassment and intimidation from those trying to protect taxi interests, even when they are away from the main airport terminals. These encounters can include verbal arguments and attempts to block their Uber vehicles.
Online forums, like Reddit, feature accounts from travelers sharing these frustrating experiences. One tourist described a “genuinely terrible” first impression after their friends were allegedly charged $150 USD for a taxi to the Hotel Zone. When this group later opted for a $25 USD Uber, they reportedly faced harassment from security personnel and were forced to walk off airport grounds to meet their driver.
Understanding the Taxi and Uber Friction
These problems are not new, with a documented history of tension stretching back for years in Cancun and other tourist spots within the state of Quintana Roo. Traditional taxi unions often argue that rideshare companies like Uber don’t adhere to the same regulatory frameworks or contribute the same fees as they do. While Uber has secured legal permission to operate in the area, its presence, particularly at the busy airport and hotel zones, remains a significant sore point.
This underlying disagreement frequently boils over into confrontations that can directly affect visitors. In fact, the severity of these disputes prompted the U.S. government to issue advisories, such as one on January 23, 2023. This specific alert reminded U.S. citizens that while app-based car services are generally available and offer a safe alternative, past disputes between these services and local taxi unions have occasionally turned violent, resulting in injuries to U.S. citizens in some instances. This underscores how tourist experiences can be unfortunately marred by these ongoing local conflicts.
What Travelers Should Do
Given these ongoing issues, tourists arriving in Cancun should be prepared.
- Book Ahead: The strongest advice from travel experts and seasoned visitors is to book your airport transportation before you leave home. Many reputable private transfer companies and shared shuttle services, like USA Transfers and Happy Shuttle, can be booked online. This offers fixed pricing, so you know the cost upfront, and drivers usually meet you in the arrivals hall, making for a smoother, safer start to your vacation. Pre-booking helps you avoid potential conflicts and overcharging.
- Know Your Options: Besides rideshares, be aware of authorized airport taxis and pre-booked shuttles. These can offer a more predictable experience.
- For a more budget-friendly choice, investigate the relatively new ADO bus service from the airport directly to Plaza Fiesta in the Hotel Zone for around $7-8 USD, keeping in mind you may need a short secondary transfer to your specific hotel.
- Stay Calm: If you find yourself in an unexpected argument, try to stay calm and prioritize your safety.
- Report Problems: If you see or experience harassment, report it to airport security or the police.
While most visitors to Cancun have no problems with their arrival, these recent incidents show a specific challenge for those choosing rideshare apps right at the airport. Staying informed and planning ahead can help make sure your vacation starts off right. Local authorities say they are working on solutions, but for now, travelers should be cautious.
